Can you start a Google Meet transcript on an iPhone or iPad?

For people who join Google Meet calls from an iPhone or iPad and cannot find Transcribe: which devices Google allows to start a transcript, the Android steps, how to get a transcript when you are on an iPhone, how to read the document afterwards, and how a notetaker such as TrackHeros records the call whatever device you use.

No. On an iPhone or iPad there is no Transcribe option in Google Meet, and that is Google's rule rather than a setting you missed. This answer is for anyone who joins Meet calls from an Apple phone or tablet and needs a transcript. It branches from how to transcribe a Google Meet call. The details come from Google's page on transcripts in Google Meet as of October 2026.

Which devices can start a Google Meet transcript?

A computer, a laptop or an Android device. Google's page says: "You can only use the Transcripts feature on a computer, laptop, or Android device." The other conditions still apply on any device: the meeting has to be on a Workspace edition that includes transcripts, and you have to be someone allowed to start one, which is the host, a co-host or, with Host management off, someone in the host's organisation.

How do you start a transcript on Android?

In the Meet app, during the call:

  1. Tap More, at the bottom right.
  2. Tap Tools, then Transcribe.
  3. In the pop-up, tap Start.

To stop, tap More, then Tools, then Transcribing, then Stop. Everyone in the meeting sees that it is being transcribed.

What can you do on an iPhone or iPad?

Get someone on a computer to start it, or move to one yourself.

  • Ask the host or a co-host before the call to start the transcript from their computer when the meeting begins. A transcript covers only what is said after it starts, so asking afterwards is too late.
  • Join from a computer if you are the host, or allowed to start one, and the call matters.
  • Turn on captions to follow the call. They help you catch a name or a figure, but they are a reading aid, not a record.
  • Take your own notes of decisions, actions, dates and figures; taking notes during a meeting you are running has a shorthand.

Can you read the transcript on an iPhone afterwards?

Google's device rule is about starting a transcript. The transcript itself is a Google Doc in the organiser's Google Drive, linked from an email and from the Calendar event, so you open it like any other shared document, provided you have access. Guests from another organisation usually need the organiser to share it; see how to download a Google Meet transcript.

How does a notetaker get round this?

It joins the call itself. The TrackHeros notetaker joins Google Meet from the meeting link as a visible participant, waiting to be admitted if the meeting requires it, and records the call whatever device you are holding, or whether you are in the call at all. The transcript and notes are filed under the client in your TrackHeros workspace afterwards. It joins the calls on the calendars you connect for your clients, or a single call whose link you paste in. More on the Google Meet notetaker page.
